Planting

There is no secret to growing daylilies successfully but some basics are required – follow these instructions and you will be rewarded for your effort. We use the following products extensively and the results are outstanding.

Where:

In a sunny well drained position where they received at least 6 hours of sun a day. In very hot parts of the country they need protection from the afternoon sun.

When:

Daylilies can be planted at any time of the year.

Soil preparation:

Dig the soil well; add compost, well rotted manure and fertilisers.  We use half a handful

each of Neutrog Bounce Back and Hunt’s Bonemeal. Neutrog Bounce Back is an organic fertiliser rich in nutrients which are immediately available as food for plant growth. This product also enhances soils structure and aids in water retention. Hunt’s Bonemeal ensures good root development which is the basis for stronger and more rapid growth of leaves and flower scapes.

Distance apart:

60 to 90cm

Depth to plant:

Place the plants in the prepared mixture spreading the roots sideways, fill with soil. Just cover the roots and base, tramp the soil down firmly and lightly water. Do not over water during the next couple of weeks while they are establishing. When your plants visibly start to grow water them with a solution of Nitrosol mixed per instructions on the bottle. This promotes rapid leaf growth resulting in more and larger flowers.

When your plants arrive:

Your plants are sent-bare rooted, clipped and will look dry. Don’t soak them, if your beds are not ready for planting heel them in in a semi-shaded position.

Care and Maintenance

Watering:

During times of rapid growth and blooming time see that your plants are watered regularly and adequately.

General garden care:

To keep your plants looking attractive during and after blooming season remove the old scapes when flowering has finished, and also remove the old outer leaves.  Mulching generously around each plant will keep the roots cool, improve water penetration and to some extent control weeds.

Fertilising:

Use a well balanced organic fertiliser and apply in August and March. We strongly recommend monthly applications of seaweed foliar fertilisers.
